Equal Rights Amendment North Carolina Alliance
It's Time to Write Women Into the Constitution!
|
|
|
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the year Alice Paul first introduced the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in Seneca Falls seeking to codify the prohibition of sex-based discrimination in the United States Constitution. For a century lawmakers, activists and grassroots organizers have been fighting to pass the ERA and we have never been closer. While the ERA has fulfilled all Article Five requirements, the last hurdle is removing an arbitrary deadline placed upon its ratification when it successfully passed Congress in 1972.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to bring the ERA up for a vote on the Senate floor this week.
A petition drive, Sign4ERA, just launched today to raise the groundswell of support we need to push the ERA over this last hurdle.
Please sign the petition, and call in your friends and family to sign, too!
In the days ahead we’ll keep you posted with progress reports, action alerts and other steps you can take to put the ERA in the Constitution. But right now:
We don’t have a moment to lose. Now is the time we must count on each other. Now is the time to act.
Watch our latest video campaign in partnership with the national ERA Coalition!
Let’s Speak Up
Let’s Step Up
Let’s refuse to shut up until the ERA is no longer held up
Let’s Ramp up and Sister Up for the change we deserve
And the Equality we should have been born into
So that our daughters and their daughters will be
Let’s Shake Up
Let’s Stand Up
Let’s Woman Up
Let’s do it Right Now!
Rise Up for ERA
Take action! The ERA-NC Alliance urges everyone to immediately ask Christopher Schroeder, left, the newly appointed Assistant Attorney General overseeing the Office of Legal Counsel, to rescind the 2020 memo to the National Archivist. That memo, sent during U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr’s tenure, effectively stopped National Archivist David Ferriero from publishing the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The ERA met all constitutional requirements when Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to ratify on January 27, 2020.
August 26th is typically when we commemorate the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That was the date it was formally published to the Bill of Rights in 1920. However, we recognize that simply achieving the right to vote was not enough to ensure that women have equal protection under the Constitution. The Equal Rights Amendment was first introduced in Congress in 1923, and is still not part of the Bill of Rights, even after Virginia became the 38th and final necessary state to ratify in January, 2020. That’s why we’re calling this August 26th Women’s (IN)Equality Day!
The ERA-NC Alliance is celebrating the bipartisan U.S. House vote today at 1:58 p.m. on House Joint Resolution 17 to lift the arbitrary time limit on the Equal Rights Amendment. The final vote was 222 to 204, with four Republicans and 218 Democrats voting yes. It is now up to the U.S. Senate to take up the companion bill, Senate Joint Resolution 1.
It’s precinct meeting time! Here is a non-partisan resolution in support of North Carolina’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment for you to use this to introduce at your precinct meetings toward getting the Equal Rights Amendment into your party’s platform. You can also download the resolution here.
A Resolution Calling for Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (2022)
WHEREAS, women, who constitute over 51% of the population of North Carolina (N.C.), play an essential and irreplaceable role in society, contributing to our economy and advancing our nation in both public and private realms; and
Bills have been filed in both the House and Senate on January 27th for the state to ratify the amendment!
HOUSE BILL 8: https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2021/H8
SENATE BILL 15: https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2021/S15
Please call or email your legislators right away! There’s a very short window for them to co-sponsor the bill: just 24 hours in the Senate and 48 in the House.
The ERA-NC Alliance has joined forces with VoteEquality.us to highlight equality-minded candidates in 2020. Below you’ll find North Carolina voter resources and tips.
This year we’re urging voters to be especially mindful to make a voting plan – COVID-19 has raised the urgency of secure absentee voting and how to stay safe while voting in person. We’ve also conducted our 2020 Candidates Survey to find out which candidates will support North Carolina’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, so voters can know which candidates have an equality mindset.
The ERA-NC Alliance has sent out a survey to all North Carolina candidates running for state and federal office, to find out which candidates support the Equal Rights Amendment. Below you’ll find a list of those candidates who have responded so far. If you know any of the candidates who have not responded, feel free to urge them to fill out the postcard that was enclosed with the letter and get it back to us!
